The importance of having enough coverage – and understanding what coverage you DO have

Something unexpected happens, something that you never thought in 100 years would happen and it happens to you! It’s important to make sure that you know your limits and how you are covered for the unexpected. By taking a few minutes of reviewing your coverages with your agent, you might be able to prevent some surprises.

Just the other day- my husband, daughter, and I were in the house folding laundry when suddenly, we hear the sounds of breaking glass and metal twisting outside our front door. The neighbors truck had popped out of gear and came careening down the hill full speed, on its journey towards us it ran into his other truck and continued down between two of our pine trees crashing into our trailer which then rammed it into our 4-year-old car. We called the police accordingly, but were advised that since it all happened on a private road they couldn’t make the police report.  This is where you need a real agent, not an 800 number. Luckily, being an insurance agent, it went much smoother having made several claims for my clients over the years.  My neighbor was also able to benefit from my experience in claims handling and knowledge of coverages.

As it turned out, the trailer was totaled, smashed beyond repair and luckily just cosmetic damages to our car.  Our neighbor didn’t have the best of coverage, but knowing our coverage we knew we were in good shape and could only hope the best for our neighbor.

The importance of having proper coverage, is making sure that when the “if” or more likely “when” happens- there aren’t any surprises.  The purpose of insurance is to put you back in a similar situation prior to the claim. It’s probably a good time to go over your coverages with your agent and make sure you are both on the same page.  Home replacement costs, vehicle replacement, medical costs, etc., have all increased more than you might have realized.   Knowing your coverages is a crucial step in protecting you and your family
