Driving during the deer rut!

The Rut has begun and the bucks are chasing after the does. As the colder weather is now in full swing we have to be a little more cautious as we drive. At a moment’s notice a deer can jump out in front of you and you have nowhere to go.

There are many scenarios that can happen when a deer jumps out onto the road, and most of the time people don’t know what to do. If you happen to come across a deer on the road and you have plenty of time to slow down, please do so. But in the event that you are unable to slow down don’t swerve because you could end up causing much more damage to your vehicle, and possibly even yourself.

Deer are always going to be most active at sunrise and sunset, at these times we all need to be a lot more watchful while on the road. Never assume that just because there was one deer that will not follow, because typically deer travel in groups, and especially if they have their fawns with them they will always be trailing a little behind their mom.

If you are to hit a deer don’t just slam on the brakes, because that could cause a bigger accident in the event you may lose control of your car. Instead take your foot off the accelerator, brake lightly and steer in the direction of the road even if that is towards the deer. In the event that you do hit a deer pull over at the first available spot and access the damage to your vehicle. Also if you are able to either call the non-emergency police line, or if you are capable try to pull the deer off to the side of the road.

A good thing to note on your auto insurance is do you have Comprehensive coverage? This covers you in the event that you do hit a deer. If you were to swerve and hit that tree, or cause other damage to your car by not hitting the deer that would be Collision coverage and could potentially go on your insurance and raise your rates.

During this time of the year, leave earlier to avoid any slow traffic, drive more cautiously, be alert, and leave more room between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Because you never know when a deer might run out onto the road.
